It's getting to that time of year when we all want to slough of the heaviness of winter and show some skin. With spring here, prepare your skin for the change in weather by removing dead skin cells to let healthy new skin regenerate. Exfoliating not only speeds up the skin regeneration process that slows as we get older, but also improves circulation and improves skins abilities to absorb moisturizers and nutrients. For healthy glowing skin, exfoliate with a quality scrub 3 times per week. If you have sensitive or thin skin 1x per week should suffice.
So, what's the best kind of scrub to use? There are all types of scrubs depending on your skin type and your preferred method of application. I'm going to specifically talk about sugar and salt scrubs today.
The first difference between salt and sugar is of course their main ingredient - salt or sugar. Salt tends so have a sharper grain or crystal making it "scrubbier" than sugar. Salt will also burn if you mistakenly use it after shaving or on an open wound. Ask me how I know... Sugar on the other hand has a rounder smoother granule thus having less of a "scrubbiness" to it and of course it doesn't burn.
Other differences between sugar and salt are the specific therapeutic benefits that salt has on the body. Salt scrubs usually contain heavily mineralized salts like Dead Sea and Himalayan Sea Salts which contain iron, calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium and copper. These minerals help to promote circulation, reduce the inflammation and detoxify the body. Sea Salts aid in unclogging pores and relaxing muscles amongst other things.
Sugar on the other hand is solely beneficial in its ability to slough off dead skin, add friction to increase circulation and is not irritation. Both Salts and Sugars combined with vitamin rich oils and butters will leave skin soft, smooth and hydrated and ready to absorb addition nutrients you may want to apply.
Both Salt and Sugar Scrubs can be found in emulsified forms for those individuals that don't like the oily residue left behind in conventional oil scrubs.
