When I began making bath and body products, I stuck to this motto. This is why we haven’t retailed our lotions and other low PH items prone to bacteria and other nasties. ALL PRODUCTS CONTAINING WATER MUST CONTAIN A PRESERVATIVE. ALL PRODUCTS COMING IN CONTACT WITH WATER SHOULD HAVE A PRESERVATIVE. Bacteria, Fungi, and other micro-organisms in product can cause a nasty case of cellulitis. For a long time cosmetics normally contained PARABENS (i.e.methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben) and FORMALDEHYDE-RELEASERS (DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine, quaternium-15, and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate) which prolong shelf life by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, fungus and microbes in products which is a must to keep people safe from infection. But what price do we way pay for that protection?
Studies have shown that prolonged use these preservatives are linked to cancer, endocrine disruption and developmental and reproductive toxicity amongst other issues. So, why take the risk, however small on personal care items we use every day?
The FDA still allows the use of these items in cosmetics and personal care items.
So, with all that being said. I have been searching for preservatives that made products safe for consumer use AND posed limited risk themselves with consumer exposure. Happily I can say I have finally found a preservative that is broad spectrum in protecting products, naturally derived and accepted by ECOCERT for the use in natural and organic cosmetics.
Gluconolactone & Sodium Benzoate is a natural preservative that is a combination of a derivative from corn, sodium salt of benzoic acid with trace amount of calcium. We will be testing this product in our formerly not for retail “fresh” products and if successful will begin making our lotions and water based products available for retail sale.
In our efforts to act responsibly to our environment, our customers and ourselves; we will always strive to educate, adapt and respond to the changing world around us.
